Activities Communicative activities in Spanish. The Spanish course tasks As we previously explained, our communicative activities work on comprehension, expression, interaction and mediation, along with the different skills necessary for the language. The communicative activity is divided into two parts: Task – Textbook: follows the structure of a textbook chosen by the school. We use the manuals that best reflect our teaching philosophy at the moment. We also adapt and amplify some of the work from the textbook according to our criteria. Task – BCNLIP: our activities are complementary to the recommended textbook tasks. They are obligatory for the students in the intensive courses and optional for those in the extensive courses. One activity is carried out every Friday. Our activities, which add a more real life vision to the textbook work, come from at least two of the following aspects: -Address current events. -Use various outside sources: music, newspapers, magazines, films, internet articles, webpages, etc. -Go deeper into one of the four language skills. -Put the student in a real life situation where it is necessary to use the language. -Involve a situation that permits the student to get to know Barcelona. -Practice the activity outside of the classroom, in a real life environment. Our communicative activities vary every month and continually adapt to the evolution of our Spanish courses. We try to involve our students in different activities in which they have the opportunity to practice the language: tours, films, songs, television programs… Touristic Tour Jewish tour Here we explain one of the most interesting periods of time in the history of Spain and Catalonia (Middle Ages until 1492) through the history of the Sephardic community (Jews of Spanish origin). Taking advantage of the fantastic location of the school, in the historical district of Barcelona, we head only 10 minutes away to the medieval “Call” neighborhood. We wander through the narrow and winding streets interpreting the traces of the past in order to understand this religious and cultural community silenced so many years ago and the impact it has had on history. We visit the oldest synagogue in Europe, the medieval baths, the main street… This activity is an ideal way to practice the different forms of the past tense: indefinite past and imperfect past. Level: B1 to C2. Roman tour Here we rebuild the origins of Barcelona, when the city was called Barcino and was founded by the first colonists of the Roman Empire. If we follow the route of the thousand-year-old roman wall, which can be found very close to the school, we can discover treasures of that time: the temple of Augusto, the aqueduct, the main streets (Cardus Maximus, Decumanus Maximus), the Roman baths and the main entrances. By the use of a historical map of ancient Barcino, we try to understand the urban distribution. It is an activity with the goal of reflecting upon that time in history and the immense legacy that the Romans left in the Iberian peninsula. We use orientative maps and texts in addition to practicing directions and localization through language and the use of the past tenses. Level: A2 to C2. Avinyò Street tour The street in which the school in situated serves as an excuse to investigate the history, architecture and daily life of Barcelona. We observe the different aspects of the street in order to allow us to discover the small “microcosms” that surround the school. This activity helps to practice the basic uses of the language: location, directions, descriptions… Level: A1 to B1. Visit to The Encants Market We travel to the Poble Nou neighborhood to lose ourselves in the popular Los Encants market. It is an authentic and original place where you can find all types of objects. The students can discover their own universe of objects: the most expensive, the cheapest, the strangest, the most beautiful… This works a wide variety of vocabulary from the world of shopping: furniture, clothing, household items, electronics… We use different structures to compare and describe objects. Level: A1 to C2. Culture Ghost tour Here we delve into the dark legends of the most magical aspects of Barcelona history. We walk through the gothic neighborhood discovering, step by step, the famous fantastical places such as the ancient Jewish cemetery and the catacombs, with the spirits of the Visigoth kings. It is an interesting route for advanced levels to work on comprehension, both written and oral, along with the capacity to narrate a story. Level: B1.2 to C2. Gaudí tour We direct ourselves to Passeig de Gracia to admire the work of Barcelona’s most famous architect, who also helped to bring fame and recognition to the city. We will give you the required tools in order to understand the architecture and the historical context of that era while working the necessary vocabulary and proposing a great number of questions and exercises. Level: A2 to B1.2. Gastronomy Culinary tour This is a tour in order to understand why Catalonia is currently a first rate worldwide gastronomical destination. Starting on Avinyò Street, we walk to the Borne neighborhood discovering bars, restaurants, bakeries, specialized supermarkets… Through this activity we work in depth the large variety of vocabulary related to the world of food. Level: B1 to C2. Cooking class This is one of the most popular activities at the school. We propose a typical dish of Catalan and Spanish cuisine such as paella, fideua or tapas. The school suggests a minimum budget in order to buy the necessary products at the Boqueria market. The students make the required purchases needed for the recipe and then observe a cooking class in the director’s house. Finally, everyone collaborates in the making of a delicious dish to be enjoyed by all. In this activity we work various aspects of the language: shopping, culinary vocabulary, the necessary constructions to give instructions… Level: A1 to C2. |
